Improv Class
Tuesdays Nov. 15th – Dec 20th 7:00-8:30pm
Location: Meridian Music, Munger Hall

Improv 101 is an introduction into the wonderful world of improvisation for actors. It is a fun filled class ranging in a wide variety of tasks, games and exercises that are designed to improve quick thinking and decision making skills in acting.

Wikipedia’s Definition: “Improvisation is the practice of acting, singing, talking and reacting, of making and creating, in the moment and in response to the stimulus of one’s immediate environment and inner feelings. This can result in the invention of new thought patterns, new practices, new structures or symbols, and/or new ways to act. This invention cycle occurs most effectively when the practitioner has a thorough intuitive and technical understanding of the necessary skills and concerns within the improvised domain. Improvisation can be thought of as an “on the spot” or “off the cuff” spontaneous activity.”

Improv is automatically thought of as comedic. There will be no shortage of laughter over the next several weeks. This class introduces improv in several categories: physical (body awareness), emotional, sensory awareness, listening skills, concentration and focus, knowing your objectives, motor skills, non-verbal communication, observation and thinking outside the box.

Tuesdays Jan 10th – Feb 28th 7:00 – 8:30pm
Location: Meridian Music, Munger Hall

Character building acting class obviously focus’s on character development. Every scene, improv exercise, cold read, monologue and/or commercial script provides an actor with the opportunity to build what they think is the best character to get the job done. This often requires taking risks. Knowing how to break down a character and becoming that character requires appropriate facial expressions, vocal production and body language. Often times actors are really convincing at one or two of the above mentioned but very rarely do they do all three. Learning how to do this is a must in acting. It requires a lot of people study, thought and then practice. That is what this class will focus on.
